Volunteering with SCARS
Our Volunteers help provide love, care and hope to the hundreds of cats and dogs that pass through our Refuge each year on their quest to find their furr-ever home. Each Volunteer is as valuable as the next, without the help and dedication of these reliable, committed people, SCARS would not be able to operate. The work may not be glamorous, but it is rewarding and will allow you to meet many like-minded people and lots of loving cats and dogs.

Volunteering Roles
We have various volunteering roles within the refuge,
Dog Kennel Volunteers:
Cleaning dog kennels and shared areas, including picking up waste, sticks, and debris
Preparing and feeding dogs according to their individual needs
Checking, cleaning, and refilling water bowls to ensure dogs always have fresh water
Exercising dogs through walks and playtime to support their physical and emotional wellbeing
Cattery Volunteers:
Cleaning cat enclosures and shared areas, including litter trays and general tidying
Preparing and feeding cats according to their individual dietary needs
Checking, cleaning, and refilling water bowls to ensure cats always have fresh water
Providing enrichment, gentle handling, and social interaction to support cats’ wellbeing and confidence
Dog & Cat Foster Carers:
Providing a safe, loving home environment and dedicated space for animals in your care
Supporting animals with daily care, including feeding, cleaning, exercise, and companionship
Helping animals settle into home life, build confidence, and prepare for adoption
Observing and sharing updates on behaviour, health, and progress with the foster coordinator
Working closely with the foster coordinator and SCARS, with ongoing guidance, resources, and support provided
Event Volunteers:
Supporting SCARS at on-site and off-site events across the community
Assisting at fundraising events to help raise vital funds for the care of animals
Promoting SCARS through awareness events, sharing information about our work and mission
Supporting adoption awareness events by engaging with the public and helping animals find loving homes
Helping with event set-up, pack-down, and general support on the day
Market Shop Volunteers:
Sorting, pricing, and organising donated items
Selling items to the public and providing friendly customer service
Keeping the shop clean, tidy, and welcoming for customers and volunteers
Supporting SCARS by helping raise funds through shop sales
Gardening Volunteers:
Helping maintain the grounds through general gardening and outdoor upkeep
Tasks may include mowing, weeding, pruning, planting, and clearing leaves or debris
Keeping outdoor areas safe, tidy, and welcoming for animals, volunteers, and visitors
Supporting SCARS by creating and maintaining a calm, pleasant environment
Maintenance Volunteers:
Assisting with general repairs and upkeep around the refuge
Tasks may include putting up shelves, basic carpentry, minor fixes, and maintenance jobs
Helping ensure facilities are safe, functional, and well maintained
Supporting SCARS by keeping the refuge running smoothly for animals, volunteers, and visitors
Linen and Laundry Volunteers:
Washing, drying, and folding linen, bedding, and towels used throughout the refuge
Sorting clean and used laundry and restocking supplies as needed
Helping maintain hygiene and comfort for animals in care
Supporting the day-to-day running of the refuge through essential behind-the-scenes work
Admin Assistants:
Answering phone calls and responding to general enquiries
Greeting visitors and providing a friendly first point of contact
Signing customers and visitors in and out of the refuge
Keeping the reception and admin areas clean, tidy, and welcoming
Supporting the team with basic administrative tasks as needed
Expectations and requirements for you to be a successful applicant
You must be 18 years or older (applications from volunteers under the age of 18 cannot be accepted for insurance reasons)
Able to work independently and as part of a team, able to follow direction under the guidance of a Team Leader
Must be physically fit, and capable of working in all weather conditions (extremely hot in summer and cold in winter)
For roles in our kennel and cattery, you must be willing to work with all breeds of dogs/cats
We ask our volunteers to commit to a minimum of six months of regular volunteering
For roles in the kennel and cattery, you will be asked to lock in for the same 5-hour shift each week
If you are unable to provide this level of commitment needed for an allocated shift, we would still love your help in other ways! We love donated items and when our social media posts are shared!
